BATTLE CREEK, MI – Firefighters faced challenges on Tuesday afternoon as high winds hampered their efforts to control a house fire that led to the likely death of multiple cats.
The Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a blaze at a home on North Mason Avenue, near Taylor Avenue, shortly after 4 p.m. on April 29. Fire crews from one engine tackled the fire, which started in the basement of the single-story, wood-framed house. Other firefighters worked to contain the flames on the first floor and searched the home.
While several cats were found and removed from the house, only one survived, according to the fire department’s report.
Despite the strong winds, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within about 30 minutes.
The fire caused significant damage to the house and its contents. Property damage was estimated at $64,700, with an additional $27,000 in damages to the interior belongings.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among people.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
