Montreal, QC – A once-struggling tomcat has traded his life as a stray for a cozy retirement—and an unexpected role as a nurturing mentor to foster kittens.
From Farm Life to Rescue
Achille, an eight-year-old black-and-white cat, spent years living on a farm where he likely fathered multiple litters. But when the property became overwhelmed with stray and abandoned cats, local rescuer Julie intervened. With the help of Chatons Orphelins Montréal, she safely trapped the injured tomcat, who was malnourished and perched alone in a barn window.
“He was very hungry, so he entered the trap quickly,” said Celine, a representative from the rescue. Rushed to the vet, Achille (formerly named Koco) received treatment for wounds, a dental procedure, and care for an eye infection. Though initially withdrawn, he gradually warmed to human touch.
A New Lease on Life
After being shaved free of matted fur and given proper nourishment, Achille blossomed. “He could finally open his eyes properly,” Celine noted. In foster care, he discovered the comforts of clean blankets, regular meals, and—most importantly—a safe place to call home.
Despite his rough past, Achille’s gentle nature shone through. “He’s sweet and emotionally dependent, craving affection like a baby,” Celine shared. But his kindness wasn’t reserved just for humans.
The Unexpected Foster Dad
Achille quickly became a surrogate father to foster kittens, offering them snuggles, playtime, and reassurance. “Even the shyest kittens relax around him,” Celine said. His calm demeanor and tolerance for their antics—whether wrestling or napping on him—helped many timid kittens gain confidence.
With his signature half-closed eyes and raccoon-like waddle, Achille became a beloved fixture in his foster home. His nightly routine? Climbing into bed to cuddle during movie nights. “He doesn’t hesitate to sprawl on top of us for extra closeness,” Celine laughed.
A Happy Ending
Two years after his rescue, Achille was officially adopted by his foster family. Now, he accompanies his human on errands—even to Home Depot—and continues to mentor new foster kittens.
“Adopting an adult cat who’s survived so much is incredibly rewarding,” Celine said. “He’s proof that every animal deserves a second chance.”
For Achille, retirement means no more scavenging or surviving—just sunlit naps, endless love, and the joy of helping other cats thrive.
