Montreal, QC – When local animal rescuer Louise responded to a call about a stray kitten seeking shelter on a porch, she had no idea she’d end up saving an entire litter—just in time for winter.
The calico kitten, drawn to the porch by dropping temperatures and hunger, was just the first of seven siblings Louise discovered. “Their rescuer tried to catch them all, but it proved to be quite challenging,” said Celine Crom of Chatons Orphelins Montreal, the rescue organization that took in the cats.
A Delicate Rescue Mission
Using a humane trap, Louise carefully secured four of the kittens, who huddled together in fear. After transporting them to safety, she returned for the remaining three—two long-haired siblings and a calico tabby—likely from the same litter.
Once in care, the kittens were treated for stomach issues and placed with a foster family. “Their foster mom weighed them daily to ensure steady growth,” Crom shared. To help socialize the shy felines, she wrapped them in cozy blankets, earning them the nickname “purrito kittens.”
From Timid to Playful
Within days, the kittens—Chai, Shakie, Hoji, and Kayu—began gaining confidence, especially at mealtime. “Though still shy, they love playing together,” Crom noted. “Chai and Kayu are inseparable—a real dynamic duo.”
When reunited, all seven kittens recognized each other immediately, tumbling and zooming around like old friends. “It was like a little party,” Crom said.
Thriving in Safety
The remaining trio—Fog, Latte, and Lava—bonded just as strongly. “Fog and Latte are inseparable. They eat, sleep, and groom together,” Crom explained. Meanwhile, Lava, the curious tabby, explores independently but stays close to her siblings.
Now safe indoors, the kittens are living life to the fullest—climbing cat trees, chasing toys, and enjoying their first warm winter. “They were rescued just before the first snowfall,” Crom said. “Thanks to Louise and our team, they’ll ring in the new year with full bellies and a forever home ahead.”
