In 2014, Abi Purser, the owner of Longcroft Luxury Cat Hotel in Welwyn Garden City, expressed her frustration after strict regulations set by the local council led to the downfall of her business.
Purser, who had founded the award-winning cattery, said she felt “completely failed” by Welwyn Hatfield Council.
The council had previously approved her application for a new cattery franchise at Kingswell Rise in Cuffley. However, due to objections from the Northaw and Cuffley Residents’ Association and the Parish Council, the council imposed strict conditions on the approval.
The planning permission granted was limited to just two years. After that time, the cattery would need to undergo another assessment, with the possibility of the business being shut down if the council did not approve an extension.
The residents’ association had raised concerns about potential noise and the impact the cattery might have on the local community.
