A days-old tabby kitten, found alone on the street after losing her mother, has captured hearts with her resilience and fighting spirit. Named Hurkle Durkle—a Scottish term meaning “to lounge about”—the tiny feline is now thriving in foster care, thanks to the efforts of animal rescue group Tails High and a dedicated foster family.
A Rough Start
Hurkle Durkle was discovered by a Good Samaritan after being separated from her mother. Despite her fragile state, the kitten clung to life until rescuers arrived. “The tiniest souls can also be the bravest,” Tails High shared in a statement. “This little miracle embodies the hope we aim to bring to more cats in need.”
Once placed in neonatal foster care, rescuers noticed unusual behavior—Hurkle exhibited involuntary twitching and a tendency to circle to the right when moving. Concerned for her well-being, her foster team consulted a neurologist to assess potential injuries.
Community Support and Progress
The local community rallied behind Hurkle through Tails High’s Spring2ACTion program, helping fund her medical care. Though initially weak, the kitten quickly gained strength, charming everyone she met. “Her foster mom was a little worried she wouldn’t get her back from the multiple vet teams fawning over her,” the rescue joked.
Medical exams ruled out fractures, suggesting her mobility issues might stem from nerve or tendon concerns. A temporary leg splint was attempted but proved unsuccessful. Undeterred, Hurkle continues to exercise her weaker leg, supported by daily physical therapy from her foster mom.
A Feline Friendship
Hurkle’s recovery has been bolstered by an unlikely bond with Clara Bow, a tortoiseshell cat who once occupied the same incubator as a rescued neonate. Now fully grown, Clara has taken on a nurturing role, offering comfort and companionship to her tiny protégé.
“Hurkle Durkle had a devastating beginning, but her future is bright,” Tails High shared. With a growing appetite, a round belly, and a community cheering her on, the brave tabby is well on her way to a full recovery—one cuddle at a time.
