A persistent tabby cat has amused internet users after repeatedly waking a woman by loudly meowing outside her bedroom window—despite not being her pet.
A TikTok video shared in May by user @amicable.finch shows the cat standing upright outside the window, meowing at full volume as if demanding attention. The poster wrote, “This cat continues woke me up meowing at my window at the top of their lungs,” adding humorously, “Pretty sure you’re on the wrong side of the fence there buddy.”
Meowing is a common way cats communicate, according to Catster, which explains that cats use different sounds and frequencies depending on their needs. Cats meow mainly to communicate with humans, a behavior that starts as kittens.
Cats may meow for many reasons. They could be hungry, want to play, or feel stressed, anxious, or scared. If a cat suddenly starts meowing more than usual, it might signal medical issues like pain, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, or cognitive problems.
Experts advise feeding cats on a regular schedule to reduce meowing for food. Providing toys and enrichment can keep cats entertained so they don’t seek attention by meowing. It’s also important to offer a quiet space where cats can rest and avoid stress.
In the TikTok comments, the woman revealed that the cat belongs to her neighbors, who were able to call it back shortly after the incident. She said, “While I don’t agree with letting pet cats outside because of how dangerous it can be, this is my neighbor’s cat, so I don’t need to call what’s on the tags. They are not injured, just very loud and talkative. The expressions they’re showing are curious, not distressed or in pain.”
The video quickly went viral, amassing over 861,000 views and more than 201,500 likes. Comments ranged from playful to affectionate. One user joked, “Girl I think that’s a meerkat.” Another urged, “Let her in right now.” And another added, “She was like ‘Do you have a cat I can play with?'”
