An orange cat named Kurt lived alone for eight months after his owner passed away, but now he has found joy again with a new family.
Kurt was very close to his owner, who rescued many stray cats over the years. The two shared a special bond—watching NASCAR together while Kurt sat on his owner’s shoulders, according to Kurt’s new owner, Courtnie Burke, who shared the story on TikTok.
When the owner died, all the other cats left the house, but Kurt stayed behind. A real estate agent visited the home, but Kurt remained alone inside. The owner’s daughter, who lived out of state in New York, tried for eight months to find someone to care for Kurt. During that time, she hired someone to visit the house, leave food, and change his litter, but the caretaker never saw Kurt—only heard him howling from another room.
Burke saw a Facebook post about Kurt and knew she had to help. When she finally took him in, Kurt was suffering from a severe infection caused by stress and spending too much time in the litter box. He had stopped grooming himself and had cuts on his nose and face.
Despite his long loneliness, Kurt quickly warmed up to Burke, her boyfriend, and her cats. Burke shared an update on TikTok, showing how Kurt has adjusted and found comfort in his new home—even after moving. He just wanted the love he had lost.
Burke said she was moved to learn about Kurt’s late owner, James. His obituary was filled with messages praising how much James cared for stray cats in his area. That gave her hope and happiness.
The TikTok video about Kurt’s rescue has touched many people, gaining over 479,700 views and 85,900 likes in two days. Viewers expressed gratitude and sympathy. One wrote, “If there’s an afterlife, I know his old owner probably felt so relieved when you adopted him.” Another said, “Alone for 8 months. That’s so sad. Thank you for saving him and giving him the best furever home.” A third added, “I can’t even imagine what this poor guy went through during those 8 lonely months. Thank goodness he now has you as his forever family.”
