Norfolk, England—A black-and-white cat with striking, cartoon-like eyes has traded her life in a feral colony for the comforts of indoor living—and her larger-than-life personality is winning hearts along the way.
Discovered near a factory in Norfolk by volunteers from Feline Care Cat Rescue, the cat, later named Mau Mau, stood out due to her unique appearance and quirks. With few teeth left, a perpetually lolling tongue, and an inability to fully close her eyes (relying instead on her third eyelid to blink), rescuers knew she’d thrive better in a home.
After a year in foster care, Mau Mau’s confidence soared. “Every time I see a photo of Mau Mau, I wonder if she’s half cat and half cartoon,” the rescue wrote on Facebook.
A Purr-fect Match
When it came time for adoption, Amelia, a lifelong cat lover and veterinary office worker, was instantly smitten. “I went to meet her and completely fell in love,” Amelia told Love Meow. “She looked even tinier sitting there, meowing at me before I entered her room.”
The once-feral feline adapted quickly to her new home, emerging from under Amelia’s bed to explore—and claim—every chair and sunlit spot as her own.
Life as a Quirky Companion
Mau Mau’s playful antics keep Amelia entertained. Her tongue, often sticking out like a “raspberry,” adds to her charm. She’s endlessly curious, chasing anything that moves—including her own tail—and “taming” fluffy toys with fierce determination.
Though her coordination isn’t always perfect (“she bumps into things,” Amelia admits), Mau Mau makes up for it with sass and stubbornness. “She’s tiny but has a huge personality and happily ignores me,” Amelia joked.
A Cat on Her Own Terms
Mau Mau isn’t a lap cat but shows affection in her own way, demanding chest scratches and supervising Amelia’s every move—whether in the kitchen or on the sofa. “She’s feisty, used to pick fights with other rescue cats, and now ‘beats up’ her toys—and my hands,” Amelia said.
Mornings begin with Mau Mau leaping onto the sofa beside her, and her days are filled with sunbathing, carrying pom-pom toys, and, above all, eating.
From feral stray to beloved house cat, Mau Mau has embraced her second chance—proving that even the quirkiest rescue pets can bring immeasurable joy.
