When Ollie, a British Shorthair cat, began acting unusually withdrawn, his owners first assumed he was just bored. But as his behavior worsened, it became clear that something deeper was troubling him.
Ollie’s emotional journey, documented by his owners Karina and Richard on TikTok (@ollie.and.otis), struck a chord with viewers. One video showing his transformation has garnered over 966,000 views, capturing the quiet sadness of a cat longing for companionship.
“We thought he was just bored… then we saw the signs,” the owners explained. Ollie would often stare out the window at the neighbor’s cat, his expression filled with longing. He also started running to the door each time someone left the house, seemingly hoping not to be left behind. “My boy was sad,” reads the text overlay in the video.
In an effort to cheer him up, his owners tried various forms of enrichment—from new toys and extended playtime to training him with a harness so he could explore outdoors safely. “We gave it our all,” said Karina. But despite their efforts, Ollie remained downcast. He slept more and appeared to be simply passing the time rather than relaxing.
Then came Otis.
Karina and Richard decided to adopt a second cat, and the effect was immediate. “He didn’t just need stimulation. He needed a companion,” said Karina. Ollie, now two years old, and Otis, who is one, bonded almost instantly. Within hours of meeting, Ollie began grooming the new arrival, and Otis responded with calm affection.
“We expected it might take weeks for them to warm up to each other,” Karina told Newsweek. “But Ollie was curious and gentle from the start. Their friendship began right then.”
The video announcing the addition of Otis—captioned “The best decision we have ever made. We gave our cat a friend he needed”—has received over 85,000 likes, with many viewers sharing similar stories of pets benefiting from companionship.
Karina described their bond as “very special.” While Otis is more active and playful due to his age, Ollie remains calm and affectionate. During the day, they rest in separate spots, but always return to one another to cuddle or play. “They’re very different in personality,” she added, “but it’s clear they love having each other.”
While cats are often thought to be solitary animals, their social needs can vary. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) notes that while many cats benefit from companionship, introducing a second cat requires caution. Under-socialized cats or those with territorial instincts may not adjust easily.
Still, Ollie and Otis’ story has inspired other pet owners. One TikTok user wrote, “My senior girl is in her twilight years, so I adopted a kitten for her. It’s like she’s had a second wind.” Another said, “I wonder if my cat would be okay with another buddy… he gets jealous so easily.”
For Ollie, having a friend was exactly what he needed—and for his owners, the decision brought joy back into their home.
