Montreal, QC – A frail, young cat struggling to survive in the woods was given a second chance when a compassionate passerby spotted her scavenging for food and immediately intervened.
The stray, later named Nikicha, was emaciated, her thick coat matted with burrs. Weak but trusting, she allowed her rescuer to pick her up without resistance. Local rescue organization Chatons Orphelins Montreal took her in, providing urgent medical care.
A Fight for Survival
At just six months old, Nikicha was severely underweight. “You could feel every bone in her body,” the rescue shared. “Her stomach had shrunk from prolonged starvation.” Veterinarians started her on a careful feeding regimen to avoid overwhelming her system.
Soon after arrival, caregivers noticed an infected leg, requiring immediate treatment. Despite her ordeal, Nikicha remained affectionate, purring and leaning into every gentle touch.
Road to Recovery
To help her regain strength, rescuers dressed her in a tiny sweater for warmth. “Her foster family fed her small, frequent meals,” the team explained. Gradually, Nikicha gained over two pounds—and her playful personality emerged.
“She placed her paw on her caregivers as if to thank them,” the rescue recalled. Now healed, she adores cuddling, often falling asleep in her foster family’s arms.
A New Leash on Life
Nikicha has since embraced indoor life with enthusiasm. She follows her humans like a shadow, “checks” bathwater with her paw, and attacks toy wands with gusto. Though tolerant of other kittens, she prefers human company.
“She wouldn’t have survived outdoors,” the rescue noted. Now thriving, her gleaming coat and loving demeanor are testaments to her resilience—and the power of kindness.
