Devon Rex vs Cornish Rex: What's the Difference?

When it comes to cat breeds, the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex are two remarkable feline varieties that often captivate the hearts of cat lovers around the world. Both breeds share some common characteristics, such as their curly coats and playful personalities, but they also have several distinct features that set them apart. In this article, we will explore the key differences between the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex breeds and provide you with the knowledge to identify them accurately.

1. Origins and History:

The Devon Rex and Cornish Rex breeds may share similar names, but their origins and histories are quite different. The Devon Rex originated in England during the 1960s when a curly-coated kitten named Kirlee was born in Devonshire. The breed was further developed by crossing Kirlee with other domestic shorthair cats and the Burmese breed. On the other hand, the Cornish Rex originated in Cornwall, England in the 1950s when a curly-coated kitten named Kallibunker was born. The breed was developed through selective breeding of Kallibunker and subsequent crosses with other domestic shorthair cats.

2. Coat Characteristics:

One of the most distinguishing features of both the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex breeds is their unique coat. The Devon Rex has a soft, wavy or curly coat that lacks guard hairs, which gives them a somewhat “rexed” or crinkled appearance. Their fur is short to medium in length, and it feels incredibly soft and velvety to the touch. In contrast, the Cornish Rex has an even more distinct coat. Their fur is extremely curly and lies close to the body, forming tight ringlets. It is also short in length, but unlike the Devon Rex, it possesses a finer texture.

3. Body Type:

While both breeds share a similar body type characterized by their slender frame, elegant proportions, and graceful movement, there are some subtle differences. The Devon Rex has a slightly stockier build compared to the Cornish Rex. They have a more muscular body with well-developed chests and strong boning. In contrast, the Cornish Rex has a more delicate and slender appearance, with a lighter bone structure. Their bodies are often described as being “whippet-like,” emphasizing their sleek and agile nature.

4. Facial Features:

When it comes to facial features, the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex breeds exhibit some distinctive characteristics. The Devon Rex has an elfin-like face with high cheekbones and large, low-set ears. Their eyes are large and expressive, set wide apart, and can be any color. The Cornish Rex, on the other hand, has a more triangular head shape with prominent cheekbones and larger, more upright ears. Their eyes are oval-shaped and set at a slight slant, which adds to their alert and inquisitive expression.

5. Temperament:

Both the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex breeds are known for their playful, affectionate, and extroverted personalities. They are highly intelligent cats that thrive on social interaction and love being in the company of their human companions. However, there may be slight variations in behavior between the two breeds. Devon Rex cats are often described as more mischievous and demanding of attention, while Cornish Rex cats tend to be more gentle and reserved. However, it’s important to remember that individual personalities can vary within each breed.

Conclusion:

In summary, the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex are two unique cat breeds with several key differences that can help you identify them accurately. From their coat characteristics to their body type, facial features, and temperament, these breeds offer distinct qualities that make them truly special. Whether you’re considering adding one of these charming felines to your family or simply appreciate their beauty, understanding the characteristics that set them apart will enhance your appreciation for these delightful breeds.
