A rescue cat named Klaus has become an internet sensation after a TikTok video showed him opening a microwave door on his own, sparking both laughter and concern from viewers.
The clip, shared on Friday by user @caits182, captures the black and white feline standing on a kitchen counter, pawing persistently at the microwave. After a few seconds, Klaus successfully opens the door, prompting his owner to quickly remove him.
The video is captioned, “Ever seen a cat open a microwave?” and has since drawn widespread attention.
Later in the week, the cat’s owner posted a follow-up explaining that Klaus, now 1.5 years old, was rescued at five months of age. He lives with his lookalike brother, Wesley, and is described as “a softie who loves cuddles,” despite his mischievous moments.
While Klaus’s behavior might seem unusual, it highlights the intelligence of cats. Feline cognition isn’t measured like human IQ, but research shows cats have strong problem-solving skills, long-term memory, and object permanence — the ability to know something still exists even when it’s out of sight.
Cats also read human cues and gestures, can tell time intervals apart, and recognize familiar voices. Though they are more independent than dogs, they can still form deep emotional bonds with humans.
Signs of an intelligent cat include curiosity, persistence, and empathy — such as comforting their owners on bad days. Some of the most intelligent cat breeds include Abyssinian, Siamese, Scottish Fold, Persian, Cornish Rex, and Turkish Angora.
Klaus’s video has now been viewed over 3.8 million times and has received more than 737,000 likes.
The comment section is full of humor. One user, LoveSyrinaIRL, wrote, “As a cat expert, this can be very dangerous for him, as he might start cooking his own food and become a chef and open his own 5-star restaurant.”
Another viewer, Ednc, joked, “God forbid a cat shows he’s capable of reheating his own food.”
And Laura added, “They’re evolving. The end is in sight for us.”
Klaus may have opened a microwave door, but he also opened a new conversation about just how smart — and sneaky — our feline friends can be.
