A 20-year-old tabby cat is looking for a new home after being found in poor condition at a major power station in North Yorkshire.
The cat, now named Buzz, was discovered at Drax Power Station near Selby. He was extremely thin, nearly blind and deaf, and covered in matted fur and faeces, which rescuers initially mistook for tumours.
Buzz was taken in by the RSPCA’s Goole branch, where he is now recovering. Staff say he is getting stronger every day and is ready for a long-term foster home.
Believed to be around 96 in human years, Buzz is one of the oldest cats the branch has ever cared for, according to an RSPCA spokesperson.
Following an urgent appeal, supporters raised about £500 to help cover the costs of his treatment. Buzz has received blood tests, dental surgery, medication, and care for arthritis and hyperthyroidism—two conditions common in older cats.
Georgina Petty from the RSPCA said Buzz’s determination to recover has been remarkable. “Although his recovery hasn’t been entirely smooth, Buzz’s resilience and refusal to give up on life has been truly astonishing,” she said.
She added that his eyesight has improved, his weight has increased, and his fur is growing back. “He’s had several teeth removed, wounds stitched up, and is receiving ongoing care,” she said.
Buzz tires easily and needs a quiet home without other pets. He is best suited to an indoor-only environment with calm surroundings.
Buzz was originally registered with another rescue center in 2005 and adopted soon after. About ten years ago, he was rehomed, but his microchip details were never updated. It’s believed that a worker at the power station may have been feeding him for some time.
The RSPCA hopes to find a foster home near Goole so Buzz can continue attending regular veterinary appointments. His food, medication, and ongoing care will be covered by the charity.
