A curious mystery has emerged across Fife, with dozens of cat stencils appearing on road signs and street sides, sparking widespread interest and speculation. This unusual trend has drawn comparisons to the infamous Beast of Balbirnie, a previous big cat enigma in the area.
Motorists and residents have been left puzzled as cat-shaped stencils appear in various locations. One post on the Fife Jammers’ Facebook page has attracted over 500 reactions and more than 100 comments. The post, which showed a stencil in Glenrothes, asked: “Would love to know who the stencil artist is. This one is in Glenrothes but I’ve seen one in Kirkcaldy too.”
Another post on the Glenrothes Awareness page by Alan Kimmitt received hundreds of reactions. He commented, “Loving this wee cat on the sign next to Riverside Park. Looks great when caught in headlights at night.”
In addition to the stencils on street signs, more colorful versions of the feline emblem have appeared at various spots along the roads across Fife. The appearance of these cat artworks has generated a flurry of online speculation. One user on the Fife Jammers site, Andy Little, noted, “They’re up Ladybank/Cupar way too. Seen a dude with a high-vis vest on with the same symbol the day they appeared… no clue what they are.”
Others are having fun with the mystery. Maxine Bell jokingly called it “Fife’s own budget Banksy,” while Irene Pearson spotted one on a bus shelter in Falkland. Several other people have also seen the cats along the Kirkcaldy Promenade.
One user pointed out a potential link to a local radio and newspaper campaign called “New Cat on the Block,” which includes a website and QR code. However, visiting the website doesn’t reveal much more—it only prompts visitors to register for email updates about the ongoing mystery.
The feline artwork has been spotted in numerous locations across Fife, including Cluny, Thornton, the Melville Lodges roundabout, the A92 dual carriageway, the road between Aberdour and Dalgety Bay, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath, Leslie, and various laybys. In total, it appears there are more than 100 stenciled cats scattered throughout the region.
While the cat campaign has captivated many, it has also highlighted an unintended consequence. Many online commenters have expressed frustration over the condition of Fife’s road signs, which are often dirty and neglected.
As the mystery continues, the public remains intrigued by the identity of the artist and the true purpose behind the feline stencils.
