FALL RIVER, Mass. — A daring rescue this week saved a six-month-old kitten whose adventurous spirit led to an unusual predicament—a glass bowl wedged tightly over her head.
The orange tabby, now named Buzz Lightyear, was discovered wandering a Fall River neighborhood with the bowl (or possibly a light fixture) firmly stuck around her head, according to the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL). A concerned passerby spotted her on Danforth Street, prompting a rescue effort by ARL field staff and Fall River Animal Control.
A Tricky Rescue
Buzz was part of a group of community cats in the area. Rescuers set up a drop trap with food inside, successfully capturing two of her siblings. Though Buzz couldn’t smell the bait due to the bowl obstructing her nose, her curiosity led her to follow the other cats into the trap.
Once secured, rescuers carefully freed Buzz from her “helmet,” allowing her to eat and breathe normally again. She was then taken to the ARL’s Dedham Animal Care and Adoption Center, where veterinarians gave her a clean bill of health—aside from being a little dirty from her ordeal.
Road to Recovery (and Adoption)
Buzz received her vaccinations and was spayed, but she’ll need time to adjust before she’s ready for adoption. Shelter staff report that while she’s still learning to trust humans, she’s already making friends with other cats at the facility.
Once she’s fully socialized, Buzz will be looking for a forever home—perhaps one with a playful dog (or, in true Toy Story fashion, a cowboy-costume enthusiast).
For now, her rescuers are just relieved her curiosity didn’t lead her into any more tight spots.
