At Epworth Hospital in Richmond, a cat named Elwood is called “the most loyal employee”. For six years, he patrolled the hospital area every day, greeted visitors and even once had his own employee ID badge. Whether it’s medical staff or the families of patients, Elwood always brings joy with his friendly personality and little “zizi” greetings, becoming an indispensable ray of sunshine in the hospital.
Elwood was not afraid of the treatment dogs in the hospital at all and interacted with them as if they were colleagues. He often rolls around or scratches against cars in the parking lot. Occasionally, he even dozes off “slacking off”, but as soon as someone passes by, he will wake up immediately to greet them. Hospital staff described him as “independent and thick-skinned”. Although he no longer wore the badge, everyone knew this furry mascot.
Although Elwood’s story is heartwarming, experts caution that cats raised outdoors may face risks such as bad weather or traffic hazards. It is recommended to let the cat safely explore the outdoors through a closed terrace or by walking it on a leash. For indoor cats, interactive games of 10 to 15 minutes each time, 2 to 3 times a day, can help them stay happy and healthy.
Elwood heals everyone in the hospital in his own way, but while the owner provides freedom for the cat, he also needs to balance safety and happiness.
