A blind cat named Stevie has captured the hearts of TikTok users with her touching reaction to sensing her owner nearby. The video, posted on Tuesday by @diaryofaneyelesscat, shows the tabby from North Carolina gently pawing in the wrong direction as she tries to locate her human on the couch.
The on-screen text reads, “POV: your eyeless cat knows you’re nearby and starts pawing for you…but she has the direction wrong.” In the caption, Stevie’s owner added, “I get emotional on a daily basis.”
Stevie was born without eyeballs, a condition caused by congenital ocular anomalies. These anomalies can result from genetic issues, pregnancy complications, or environmental factors such as toxins or poor nutrition affecting the mother.
Despite her disability, Stevie appears to thrive, as most blind cats do. According to veterinary experts at Davies Veterinary Specialists, blind cats rely on their other senses—like smell, hearing, and touch—to create a mental map of their surroundings.
To keep blind cats safe and comfortable, experts recommend keeping them indoors, avoiding moving furniture, and maintaining consistent locations for food, water, and litter trays. Sudden loud noises should be avoided, as they can startle the cat. When no one is home, leaving the TV or radio on can help orient them using sound.
Talking to blind cats is also helpful. It reassures them and strengthens their sense of where their owner is. Textured mats placed outside each room can also guide them by touch. Cats Protection, a U.K.-based charity, advises always speaking to a blind cat before picking them up to avoid startling them.
The video of Stevie quickly went viral, earning over 1.1 million views and more than 227,900 likes.
