Thousands of TikTok users are following the emotional journey of a formerly feral cat learning to trust her new owner. Sarah, who shares updates under the handle @heysarahtherapy, has documented her experience with Neve—a sick young cat that began sleeping in her backyard after her family disappeared from the nearby park where she was born.
Realizing the cat was unwell, Sarah and a neighbor managed to safely catch her and take her to the vet. There, Neve received treatment and was spayed. Sarah then brought her home, determined to help the frightened animal adjust to life indoors.
Fittingly named Neve—short for “never touch me”—the cat spent her first four days terrified, hiding from any interaction. But by the fifth day, she began exploring her surroundings, even while Sarah was present. Progress was slow. An early setback occurred when Sarah tried to wash Neve’s blanket, causing the cat to retreat in fear for an entire day. Sarah felt heartbroken, but that night something changed—Neve started playing with toys, even while Sarah remained in the room.
From that moment, the bond between them began to grow. By day 10, Neve had a cat tree, toys, and plenty of hiding places. Sarah also added personal items for Neve to sniff and grow used to her scent. The formerly feral cat, once too scared to be near people, now actively seeks out playtime and seems eager for Sarah’s presence.
The original video, posted May 19, has gained more than 70,000 likes, with many viewers sharing their own experiences and tips for handling feral cats. One commented, “In a few months you won’t know she was ever feral,” while others emphasized patience, saying, “Progress is slow, but consistency matters.”
Experts agree. According to PetMD, helping a feral cat adjust to indoor life requires patience, quiet environments, and associating your presence with positive things like food and play. Some cats may never fully adapt to indoor life, but they can still be cared for with outdoor shelters and feeding stations.
Though setbacks still occur—like a recent scare from a leaf blower—Sarah and Neve have built a growing bond. Today, Sarah says they are in the “best place possible,” and continues to share their touching story with her followers.
