GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL — A timid stray cat and a feisty “shelter bully” have defied expectations by forming an inseparable friendship at the Exploits Valley SPCA in Newfoundland.
From Scared Stray to Social Sweetheart
When Carter, a scrawny tabby, arrived at the shelter as a malnourished stray, he was too fearful to interact. Staff described him as withdrawn, hissing at anyone who approached.
“Other cats leap into your arms, but Carter needed patience. Behind those scared eyes was a gentle soul who just wanted safety,” the shelter shared.
Over six months, volunteers worked tirelessly to socialize him. Gradually, Carter transformed—rolling over for belly rubs, seeking affection, and even showing off a playful side.
“He’s done a total 180. Now he’s the first to greet visitors,” staff said, laughing about his newfound habit of sprawling “basketball-sized” in the middle of the floor.
Enter Henry: The “Bully” Who Met His Match
Meanwhile, Henry, another rescue, arrived with matted fur and a big personality. After a grooming session, he settled in—but his territorial streak emerged.
“Henry wanted all the attention. He’d swat at other cats and even the hands that fed him,” staff admitted. “We assumed he’d need to be an only cat.”
An Unexpected Bromance
Months passed, and neither cat found a home—until fate intervened. Against all odds, Henry, the self-proclaimed “king” of the shelter, took a liking to Carter.
“Henry, who usually tolerates no one, decided Carter was his equal,” staff said. The once-aloof bully began trailing Carter, cuddling him, and even mirroring his calm demeanor.
Carter, in turn, seemed to thrive with Henry’s lively antics. The pair now nap together, share adventures, and have become the shelter’s most heartwarming duo.
“It’s a bromance no one saw coming,” staff shared. “Carter’s purrs are louder, and Henry’s finally found his peace.”
Hoping for a Happy Ending
After over a year in shelter care, staff hope the pair can be adopted together. “Their bond proves love changes everything—even for the unlikeliest friends.”
