NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, UK — Animal Welfare students from Moulton College are gaining valuable hands-on experience, thanks to a long-running partnership with Cloverlea Cattery and Cat Grooming Salon in Flore.
The cattery, owned by Christine Mackintosh, has welcomed hundreds of students on placement since it opened in 2009. Many have gone on to become full-time employees, including four current staff members: Hayley Walsh, Jodie Allen, Lauren Hillyard, and Shannon Richards.
Christine’s relationship with Moulton College began over 15 years ago. “I wanted to find people who were as passionate about animals as I am,” she said. “One student impressed me so much during her placement that she joined full-time after graduating and stayed nearly 10 years.”
Today, Cloverlea can care for up to 50 cats and small animals year-round. Its reputation draws clients from across the Midlands, and even as far as London and Yorkshire. Christine credits her dedicated staff and student helpers for the cattery’s success.
Currently, 23 Moulton College students are gaining work experience at Cloverlea, averaging up to eight hours per week. Among them are Lewis and Anna, who have already stood out. Anna works alongside Hayley and Lauren in cat care, while Lewis has shown talent in IT and assists with administrative tasks.
Moulton College offers diplomas in Animal Care, Veterinary Nursing, and a T Level in Animal Science. Its Animal Welfare Centre houses more than 150 domestic and exotic species, providing a rich learning environment.
Carley Daniels, Head of Animal Welfare and Management at the college, praised Christine’s impact. “She’s played a critical role in building the skills and confidence of hundreds of students,” Daniels said. “Her support gives them a solid foundation for future careers.”
Christine added, “Work experience is the perfect springboard into the world of work. It’s a privilege to support these students and show them what’s possible in the animal care industry.”
