A pet owner who planned to foster a cat temporarily ended up with a new furry family member, thanks to her cat Yonkers.
In a heartwarming TikTok video posted in May under the username @yonkieboy, Yonkers and the foster cat can be seen cuddling and grooming each other. Despite it being their first meeting, they acted like lifelong friends.
The owner captioned the video: “POV: you decided to foster a cat short term, but this is him and my cat on the first day they meet.” She added, “Idk if it’s going to be a short term visit…”
While cats are often seen as solitary animals, some enjoy having a companion. Before introducing a new cat, owners should observe if their pet truly needs one. Signs like loneliness, clinginess, changes in eating habits, or destructive behavior can suggest a cat wants company.
However, veterinarians advise ruling out medical issues before assuming these behaviors mean loneliness.
If the cat is healthy and needs a companion, experts recommend introducing the cats slowly. They should start in separate spaces and have supervised meetings until they are comfortable with each other, according to Pet MD.
The video quickly went viral, earning over 510,000 views and nearly 100,000 likes. Many viewers shared similar stories.
One user wrote, “That’s how we ended up with a cat named Kitten. We called him Kitten to discourage ourselves from keeping him, but our other cat decided.”
Another said, “One of my foster cats fell in love with my cat immediately. She cuddled him right away, so I knew it was a foster failure.”
A third commented, “I think your cat just adopted a cat, so technically you still only have one cat, who happens to also have a cat.”
