Christine Koltun has rescued cats for 20 years, but a recent message stood out as one of the most unusual. A concerned Edmonton resident reached out to her about a stray tabby cat that appeared to have too many legs.
“I read the email four times,” Koltun said. “I kept thinking, ‘What is this person seeing?'” To her surprise, the report was accurate — the cat did have extra legs.
Now named Bitsy, the cat is recovering after undergoing surgery at a veterinary clinic in Edmonton. Vets removed a second pelvis and three legs that did not function properly. Bitsy, now left with three legs, is adjusting well.
“She’s already rolling around, using the litter box, and acting like a typical cat,” Koltun said.
Koltun, who runs the Edmonton cat rescue organization Furget Me Not, first heard about Bitsy in late April. A resident in the Wellington neighborhood said the cat had appeared in her backyard, dragging three injured hind legs.
“It was clear we needed to bring her in right away, for her safety from predators and people,” said Koltun.
Luckily, catching Bitsy was easy. She was friendly, social, and in surprisingly good health apart from her legs. Her coat was clean, and her teeth were in good condition.
Bitsy now has a new start, and Koltun hopes her story will raise awareness about the needs of stray animals.
