CASPER, Wyo. – A recall has been issued for a cat food product sold in Wyoming due to possible contamination with H5N1, commonly known as bird flu.
According to a statement from Laramie County Public Health, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled Savage Cat Food’s Large Chicken Boxes (84 oz.) and Small Chicken Boxes (21 oz.). The affected products have a “Better If Used By” date of November 15, 2026.
The recalled food was distributed in Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska. Officials are urging pet owners who fed this product to their cats to monitor for symptoms of bird flu. These include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, red or inflamed eyes, eye and nose discharge, breathing problems, and neurological signs such as seizures, stiff movements, lack of coordination, or blindness.
Pet owners noticing any of these symptoms in their cats should contact a veterinarian immediately. Anyone who still has the product should return it to the retailer for a refund and proper disposal.
Health officials also warn that humans can contract H5N1 if the virus enters the eyes, nose, or mouth. People who handled the food should watch for symptoms such as eye redness, cough, sore throat, sneezing, muscle aches, fatigue, fever, and digestive issues.
So far, no human cases linked to the recalled cat food have been reported.
