LOS ANGELES – A pair of tabby kittens, Chandler and Monica, have defied the odds after a precarious start to life, thanks to the dedicated efforts of rescuers and foster caregivers.
A Desperate Beginning
About a month ago, Baby Kitten Rescue, a Los Angeles-based organization, received an urgent call regarding a young feral cat in distress. The cat, suffering from a severe infection, was brought to an emergency vet clinic where she gave birth to four kittens—only two of whom survived.
“The mother was too ill to nurse, so we rushed the kittens into our care that same night,” said Caroline Grace, founder of Baby Kitten Rescue. The newborns, later named Chandler and Monica, were dehydrated, hypothermic, and in critical condition. Placed in an incubator, they clung to life—and to each other.
Fighting Spirit and Unbreakable Bond
After five days of intensive care, the siblings stabilized and were transferred to foster volunteer Pei Chiu. Despite their fragile state, their personalities quickly shone through.
“These babies have lungs,” Pei told Love Meow. “From the first hour, I could tell they were vocal, spirited, and full of opinions.”
The duo purred constantly, even rolling onto their backs for belly rubs—a rare display of trust in neonatal kittens.
Milestones and Growing Pains
Chandler and Monica have since hit key developmental markers: opening their eyes, taking wobbly first steps, and even discovering toys.
“Monica hoards toys in her corner while Chandler naps belly-up,” Pei said. Though nearly identical, Chandler’s deeper meow and larger size help distinguish him from his sister’s high-pitched chirps.
Their resilience has impressed caregivers. “Their will to live was clear from day one—loud purrs, ‘air biscuits,’ and absolute trust,” Pei added.
A Helping Paw from a Former Foster
The kittens have an unlikely mentor: Tuco, Pei’s resident cat and a former foster fail. He watches over them, offering the same comfort he once received. “He adores every foster kitten and teaches them the ropes,” Pei said.
Meanwhile, the kittens’ feral mother is recovering under the care of her rescuer, with plans for spaying once fully healed.
Looking Ahead
Now thriving, Chandler and Monica are energetic, playful, and inseparable. “They have huge personalities and will need a home that lets them be their full, fabulous selves,” Pei said.
