Bay Ridge, NY—A mother cat and her three kittens were discovered huddled in a narrow, debris-filled gap between two buildings, prompting quick action from concerned neighbors and a local rescue group.
The feline family was found near garbage bins in a cold, unsheltered space. After spotting the vulnerable group, residents contacted Whiskers-A-GoGo, a cat rescue organization. Volunteer Leanne responded immediately, arriving the next morning to find the kittens—gray and white—already venturing dangerously close to a busy sidewalk.
“There was no time to waste,” Leanne said. “With the help of tuna, baked chicken, and a neighbor who moved the bins with a screwdriver, we safely trapped the mom and gathered the kittens.”
A New Beginning Indoors
The kittens, still young, adapted quickly to human care, while their mother—dubbed Bay Ridge Mama—remained cautious but cooperative. “She never gave me trouble when I weighed the kittens, though she’d stare me down and hiss occasionally to remind me who’s in charge,” Leanne recalled.
The devoted mother cat nursed and groomed her trio tirelessly, occasionally resting atop their hiding box while they slept. Soon, the kittens learned to use the litter box and began wrestling, pouncing, and climbing—their playful energy filling their foster home.
An Unexpected Expansion
Days later, Leanne encountered another crisis: four gray kittens abandoned outside in cold, windy weather with no mother in sight. After waiting in vain for their mom’s return, she brought them home and introduced them to Bay Ridge Mama.
“I asked her politely if she’d mind feeding four more mouths—and she took them in right away,” Leanne said. The protective surrogate mom supervised as Leanne bottle-fed the newborns through the night, then cleaned and cuddled them alongside her own kittens.
A Happy Reunion and Bright Future
While caring for the expanded family, rescuers continued searching for the gray kittens’ mother. Their persistence paid off—she was eventually found and reunited with her babies.
Meanwhile, Bay Ridge Mama has blossomed in foster care, now seeking affection and no longer hiding. Her original kittens, growing more vocal and adventurous daily, are thriving under her watchful gaze.
“She’s relieved to never worry about food or safety again,” Leanne said. As the kittens prepare for their next chapter, their once-struggling mother rests easy, knowing her family is finally secure.
