SPARKY – Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky is having a standout year. Over the past 12 months, the local, foster-based organization has teamed up with Friends of the Shelter in Ohio County to launch a low-cost spay and neuter clinic. According to SPARKY’s John Austin, the clinic has already served around 500 dogs and cats.
Additionally, thanks to a grant from the William and Marilyn Young Foundation, SPARKY has opened a pet pantry. This initiative provides food and supplies to pet owners struggling to care for their animals. Bridget Austin, John’s wife, shares that the rescue is actively seeking a larger facility as they have outgrown their current space. The goal is to help families keep their pets at home, preventing them from entering the overloaded animal welfare system.
Last night, during SPARKY’s 8th Annual Bark in Style Fashion Show, another exciting announcement was made. Inspired by the success of the River Kitty Café in Evansville, Indiana, SPARKY revealed plans to open its own cat café in Owensboro.
Though still in the early stages of planning, the café will offer a relaxing environment where visitors can meet adoptable cats. The Handsome Cat Café, as it will be called, aims to be a place where “best friends meet,” with a cozy atmosphere where people can enjoy coffee, snacks, and spend time with cats. More details, including the café’s location and coffee partner, will be announced soon.
