BOHEMIA, Long Island (WABC) — Authorities rescued more than 60 cats from dangerous and filthy conditions at a home in Bohemia over the weekend.
The animals were found on Saturday at a house on Westminster Drive. According to officials, 69 cats were removed alive, including eight newborn kittens. Sadly, at least three of the cats were later euthanized due to their condition.
The rescue operation was led by the Long Island Cat and Kitten Solution. Vice President John Debacker described the scene as “disgusting,” with urine and feces covering the floors, walls, and even the stairs. “I almost tripped up the steps because they were soaked in urine,” he said.
In addition to the living cats, police discovered 28 dead cats in the home. Of those, 24 were found stuffed inside a freezer. Others were hidden in furniture and boxes around the house.
Outside the home, boxes that appeared to serve as makeshift shelters for the cats were placed on the lawn. The homeowner declined to speak with reporters. It remains unclear whether he will face charges.
Neighbors expressed their frustration on Monday, noting the strong smell and the constant presence of stray cats on their properties. “Especially in the summer, every time you came up to the front door, you would smell ammonia,” said neighbor Brian Bang. He added that neighbors had offered help in the past, but the homeowner claimed everything was under control.
The cats are now under the care of the Town of Islip and are being monitored for health issues.
“It probably started with two cats, then it just got out of control,” Debacker said. He urged residents to take advantage of spay and neuter programs to avoid such tragic situations.
The Suffolk County SPCA is now seeking donations to raise $10,000 to help cover veterinary costs and medical supplies for the rescued cats.
