While on a walk in Washington, Mehdi G came across a cat in terrible condition. Her fur was dirty and severely matted, and he knew he couldn’t leave her behind. What he didn’t expect was the story her microchip would tell just a day later.
In a post on Reddit’s r/cats, Mehdi G shared how he brought the cat home and started caring for her right away. Her fur was so tangled it looked like clumps, and he carefully cut away what he could. According to pet care site The Spruce Pets, matted fur can cause serious pain for cats, leading to skin bruises and infections. It also blocks airflow and can trap bacteria or parasites.
After trimming her fur, Mehdi G gave the cat a bath and scheduled a vet visit for the next day. He fed her, gave her water, and made sure she had a safe space to sleep.
The next day, the vet scanned her for a microchip. To Mehdi’s surprise, it showed she was registered in 2010—making her at least 15 years old. The vet’s office reached out to the original owner, who said she had moved away 10 years ago and had left the cat with someone else. She no longer remembered who took the cat but was shocked and saddened to hear of her condition.
With her permission, Mehdi adopted the cat and named her Lil Bit.
Lil Bit received all her needed medical care and vaccines. She now has a new home filled with soft blankets and attention. Mehdi said she’s adjusting well and is a “very sweet and cuddly” cat. She either naps in a warm pile of blankets or curls up in his lap.
He updated Reddit followers with photos and shared that Lil Bit now has a collar with her name. She’s also getting along with his other senior cat.
The post received over 4,900 upvotes and more than 270 comments, with many praising Mehdi’s act of kindness.
“You didn’t find that cat on your walk. That cat found you,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “You are an angel, take good care of her.” A third summed it up: “Faith in humanity restored for today!”
