A severely burned cat was the lone survivor from a Kyiv apartment destroyed in a Russian missile and drone attack during the night of May 6–7. The assault, part of a larger strike on multiple Ukrainian cities, killed the cat’s owners and several other pets.
Russian forces launched five ballistic missiles and 187 drones in the overnight attack. Falling debris was reported in several parts of Kyiv, where fires and destruction spread across residential areas. In total, the strike killed two people and injured eight others.
Among the victims were a 64-year-old woman and her 27-year-old son, who lived on the top floor of a five-story building. Local officials said the woman, a volunteer who cared for 10 cats, could not reach a shelter with her son, who had a disability. She was due to celebrate her birthday just two days later.
The Kyiv Animal Rescue Group (KARG) reported finding five cats dead alongside the victims. Rescuers also discovered a sixth cat outside the building. The animal suffered severe burns and lung injuries and is now receiving oxygen therapy in intensive care. Four more cats remain missing.
The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed the deaths and identified the victims by their birth years, 1960 and 1997.
Elsewhere, the same night saw at least 13 Russian strikes hit Zaporizhzhia, damaging infrastructure and knocking out power for tens of thousands. One home was destroyed, 18 others were damaged, and four people were injured. In Kherson, shelling left a civilian trapped under rubble, but they were later rescued.
Ukrainian officials condemned the wave of attacks as a direct insult to recent U.S. peace efforts and urged the international community to increase sanctions and pressure on Russia.
