OLYMPIA, Wash. — Wild Coast LLC, also known as Wild Coast Raw, has expanded its recall of raw cat food due to concerns over contamination with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
The recall, first announced in February, initially included two lots of the company’s Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula after tests confirmed the presence of HPAI. The affected lots were #22660 and #22664. On March 1, the company added four more lots to the recall: #22653, #22641, #22639, and #22672. All affected products have a best buy date of 12/25.
The raw cat food is sold frozen in 16-ounce and 24-ounce packages. It was distributed to pet food stores in Washington and Oregon.
Cats infected with HPAI may show symptoms such as fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, inflamed eyes, eye and nose discharge, breathing trouble, and neurological issues like tremors, seizures, or blindness. Experts say cats are more vulnerable to the virus than dogs, and some infected felines have died.
So far, no human cases of HPAI have been linked to the recalled products, even among those who handled the food.
Health officials urge pet owners to stop feeding the affected food and to contact a veterinarian if their pets show signs of illness.
