Kashmir is grappling with a sharp increase in cat bite cases, coinciding with a notable rise in pet ownership across the region. Medical authorities report that hospitals and clinics in Srinagar and surrounding areas have treated 30% more cat bite injuries in the past year, with veterinarians attributing the trend to closer human-feline interactions.
“As more families adopt cats as pets, the frequency of bites—often from unvaccinated or stressed animals—has gone up,” said Dr. Aisha Khan, a dermatologist at Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital. Many cases involve children under 12, who are most likely to be bitten during play, she added.
Veterinary experts highlight two key factors fueling the surge:
Lack of Proper Vaccination: Over 60% of pet cats in Kashmir remain unvaccinated against rabies, raising infection risks.
Stress-Induced Aggression: Cats adopted without proper socialization or kept in confined spaces often exhibit defensive behavior.
Local animal welfare groups are launching awareness campaigns, urging owners to:
- Ensure rabies vaccinations within three months of adoption.
- Provide enrichment activities to reduce feline anxiety.
- Teach children safe handling practices, such as avoiding sudden movements around cats.
“Responsible pet ownership is crucial,” said Farah Shah of Kashmir Animal Welfare Trust. “Simple steps like regular vet check-ups and creating a calm environment can prevent most bites.”
Health officials also warn of potential rabies transmission, noting that two cat bite cases this year required rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. “People should never underestimate a cat bite,” said Dr. Khan. “Even minor wounds need immediate cleaning and medical evaluation.”
As the region’s pet culture grows, authorities hope the combined efforts of health departments and animal advocates will curb the trend. “We need a collaborative approach—from vaccination drives to public education—to keep both pets and people safe,” Shah emphasized.
