For Roman Smith, his cat Gandalf—affectionately called “Gannie”—was more than just a pet; he was family. Adopted in 2003 when Smith was just nine years old, Gandalf quickly became his closest companion, offering unwavering loyalty through every stage of life.
An Instant Connection
From the moment Gandalf entered his home, Smith knew they shared a special bond. “Whatever I was facing, I always had Gannie by my side,” Smith told The Dodo. “I would wake up to him cuddled up next to me every morning. He was my best friend.”
A photo from that first year captured the pair in a quiet moment—Smith in an orange and red shirt, cradling Gandalf, who lounged contentedly in his arms. “I’m glad my parents took pictures back then,” Smith said. “Phone cameras weren’t really a thing in 2003!”
Two Decades of Friendship
As Smith grew up, Gandalf remained a constant presence, offering comfort through teenage struggles and major life decisions. “Having the same cat through so many stages brought us as close as a pet and owner can be,” Smith said.
Despite his small stature, Gandalf ruled the household with a mix of feistiness and affection. “He was a little fireball—king of the dogs and other cats,” Smith recalled. “But he was also incredibly loving. The slightest touch would make him purr, and he always wanted to play.”
A Final Farewell
In his later years, Gandalf slowed down but remained devoted, curling up beside Smith during quiet moments. “He mellowed but kept some of that fire, especially at mealtime,” Smith said. “If his food was late, he’d let everyone know!”
When Gandalf passed away, Smith honored their bond by recreating their childhood photo—wearing an orange shirt and holding his beloved cat one last time. He shared the touching before-and-after images on Reddit, where they resonated with thousands.
“A cat living 20 years is rare, so this picture is incredibly special to me,” Smith said. “It shows just how long we had together.”
Though Gandalf is gone, his memory remains a cherished part of Smith’s life. “Losing him left a huge hole in my heart,” he said. “But I know one day, thinking of him will bring a smile before a tear.”
