A pregnant cat’s unusual behavior of leading her owner to her birthing box has sparked curiosity on Reddit, prompting experts to explain why cats do this.
The cat’s owner, posting under u/SnooPears3163, shared photos and wrote that her very furry tabby had been meowing and bringing her to a box lined with blankets. She wondered if this meant the cat was close to giving birth.
Dr. Michelle Dulake, CEO of Fera Pets, told Newsweek this is common nesting behavior. As the due date nears, cats look for safe, quiet spaces to have their kittens. By bringing her owner to the box, the cat is seeking comfort and reassurance.
“This shows she feels vulnerable and wants companionship,” Dulake explained. “Pregnancy can make cats anxious, so petting her helps calm her nerves.”
Dulake advises owners to provide a clean, quiet, and comfortable birthing spot. Other signs of labor may include more meowing, nesting, and changes in appetite.
She also warned to watch for any signs of distress and to contact a vet if needed. Pregnant cats require a balanced diet for their changing nutritional needs and constant access to fresh water.
The owner later confirmed the tabby was indeed pregnant and eventually went into labor, though no updates have been shared since.
The story resonated widely online, with users sharing their own experiences. One wrote about staying by her cat’s side during labor, while another noted the cat was seeking support and protection. Another commented that the cat trusts her owner to care for her kittens if anything happens.
This behavior highlights how closely cats bond with their humans, especially during such a vulnerable time.
