Phoenix, AZ — When a severely underweight kitten named Small Fry arrived at the Arizona Humane Society, she needed more help than her siblings. But an unexpected bond with an 11-year-old cat named Emilio—a veteran foster mentor—changed everything.
A Rocky Start
Small Fry was part of a litter of four stray kittens (Big Mac, McFlurry, Chicken Nugget, and Small Fry) rescued by the shelter. At just 188 grams (4 weeks old), she was dangerously small and struggled to eat.
“She was frantic and overwhelmed, even with syringe feedings,” said Angelica, a neonatal veterinary technician who cared for her. After a brief stint in foster care, Small Fry had to return to the shelter’s ICU for round-the-clock support.
Fighting to Thrive
While her siblings flourished in foster care, Small Fry relied on Angelica’s constant attention. Slowly, she gained strength—and attitude. “She became playful, sassy, and obsessed with food,” Angelica told Love Meow. The kitten would nap mid-meal or raid other cats’ bowls, her tiny belly rounding out.
But she still needed guidance—and that’s where Emilio stepped in.
The Purr-fect Mentor
Emilio, an 11-year-old cat with a soft spot for fosters, had helped raise 90 kittens (and even puppies and guinea pigs) over the years. When he met Small Fry, he was patient with her nervousness. “She’d never seen an adult cat before,” Angelica said.
Soon, Emilio became her pillow, playmate, and protector. He taught her boundaries, encouraged her to explore, and even tolerated her sneak attacks. “He follows her everywhere,” Angelica laughed.
A Bright Future
Now 7 weeks old and nearly 2 pounds, Small Fry is a bold, energetic kitten with a love for food and mischief. Thanks to Emilio and Angelica, she’s thriving—proof that even the tiniest survivors can flourish with the right support.
