INDIANAPOLIS — What sounded like faint meows coming from her riding lawn mower turned out to be a surprising—and urgent—discovery for one Indiana woman.
Two months ago, the Good Samaritan followed the cries and found eight starving kittens trapped beneath the mower’s blades. With no mother cat in sight, she carefully freed the litter and contacted Animal Rescue & Protection Organization (ARPO) for assistance.
Round-the-Clock Care for Hungry Kittens
The kittens, weak and desperately in need of nourishment, were placed with experienced bottle-feeders.
“Thankfully, they latched onto the bottle right away with hungry little mews,” ARPO shared.
Feeding eight kittens proved challenging, so foster volunteer Lori White took in five, while another caregiver handled the remaining three.
Personalities Shine as Kittens Grow
The litter quickly developed distinct quirks:
Daffodil, a bold calico, declared herself the “diva” of the group—climbing arms for bottle feedings and bossing around plush toys.
Greta, a gray tabby, was an eager eater and one of the first to transition to solid food.
Sprout, a darker tabby, resisted weaning until he hit two pounds, flailing dramatically during meals.
Mikey and Sam, two black kittens, balanced the group—Mikey as the vocal, playful one, and Sam as the easygoing sibling.
From Helpless to Hellions
Now in a spacious playpen, the kittens spend their days racing around and serenading their foster mom with loud mealtimes demands.
“Daffodil still prefers bottle service on my lap,” Lori joked. “Meanwhile, Greta prides herself on being independent—but loves cuddles.”
All eight kittens are thriving and will soon be ready for adoption. Until then, their fosters are enjoying the chaos—and the joy—of raising this lively litter.
