A cat owner’s attempt to stop their feline from climbing the refrigerator has taken an unexpected turn, delighting internet users.
In a viral Instagram video shared in March under the username @the.life.of.loki_, the owner explains their attempt to keep Loki, their cat, off the fridge. The plan was simple: place a bed—something Loki hated—on top of the refrigerator, hoping it would discourage him. However, the cat’s reaction was not what they expected.
“So, to stop you from going up there, we put that bed up there because you hated it. But now, you’re kneading it,” the owner says, speaking to Loki, who continues to make biscuits on the very bed he once despised.
The owner humorously adds, “Look at the cheek of it! All of a sudden, you love that bed now because it’s all the way up there. You’re a naughty boy!”
Cats, by nature, are climbers. According to Doylestown Veterinary Hospital in Pennsylvania, climbing offers both practical and instinctual benefits for felines. Cats have a natural instinct to perch in high places, providing a better view of their environment to spot potential prey, such as mice or birds. Climbing also offers a sense of security, as it provides an escape route when they feel threatened, such as when there’s a dog or another animal around. For indoor cats, vertical spaces help them feel safe and calm, offering them a way to connect with their surroundings.
Anita Kelsey, a cat behaviorist, notes that indoor cats need outlets to release the energy they would otherwise expend outdoors. Providing climbing poles and other fixtures can give them a fun and healthy way to do so.
The video quickly gained traction online, amassing over 4.3 million views and more than 249,000 likes. Commenters were amused by Loki’s defiant behavior. One user, Hols_79, wrote, “The thing I love best about cats doing something naughty is how they always look you dead in the eye while they’re doing it.”
Another commenter, Arielleshorr, added, “He’s so happy you finally caught onto what he wanted.”
The video captures not only Loki’s mischievous charm but also the unpredictable nature of feline behavior, making it a hit among cat lovers everywhere.
