GASTON, Ind. — Two newborn kittens with striking exotic markings were discovered in a Gaston barn last week, prompting a coordinated rescue effort. Their unusual appearance has raised questions about their lineage, with experts suspecting they may be part wildcat.
Alicia Jones found the fragile kittens with their eyes still closed and immediately noticed their distinctive coats, which resembled those of wild felines. She brought them to the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) on Saturday for urgent care.
Veterinary Assessment and Emergency Care
ARF transported the kittens to a local veterinarian, who confirmed they were not typical domestic cats. “The vet identified them as exotic animals, likely mixed-breeds,” ARF stated in a Facebook post. Recognizing the need for specialized attention, the shelter contacted Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Center Point, Indiana.
Staff provided round-the-clock care, attempting to feed the premature kittens and keeping them warm. “They were extremely fragile, and no mother or siblings were found nearby. We did everything possible for them,” ARF added.
Tragically, one kitten did not survive. The surviving sibling is now being bottle-fed and housed in an incubator for stabilization.
Mystery Surrounds Breed
Authorities are working to determine the kittens’ exact breed. Initial assessments ruled out tigers (due to their small size) and bobcats (which have longer tails). Current speculation points to a hybrid breed, such as a Bengal or Savannah cat—crosses between domestic and wild felines.
However, Exotic Feline Rescue noted that it’s uncommon for such hybrids to give birth in an unfamiliar barn, deepening the mystery.
Ongoing Investigation
The surviving kitten remains under close observation as rescuers seek answers about its origins. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
