A local resident has applied to Mid Sussex District Council for planning permission to build a 14-pen cattery in the rear garden of a Burgess Hill property.
Mrs. Tina Jones submitted the application for 189 Leylands Road, seeking approval to construct an outbuilding that could accommodate up to 28 cats. The proposal also includes converting a single garage into a reception and food preparation area to support the cattery operations.
According to the planning statement, the business will be family-run. Mrs. Jones, a qualified registered veterinary nurse with 30 years of experience, will manage the cattery alongside her daughter, who has four years’ experience in a veterinary practice.
The planned cattery would be located at the bottom of the garden, at least eight metres from the nearest neighbouring property. The site is a detached bungalow set back from the road and overlooks St Andrews Cricket Club and Sidney West Recreation Ground.
The proposed cattery would be constructed with a PVCu framework, toughened safety glass, insulated panels, PawSafe mesh, and a solid insulated roof. It would feature a smooth floor surface with a minimum fall of 1:80 toward the front corridor to support drainage.
The facility would operate from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 12pm on Sundays.
The application also outlines a dedicated waste disposal system. Business waste would be stored in sealed bins placed inside a secure shed at the rear of the garden. A third-party company would handle waste collection once the building work is completed. Environmental health officers will be consulted to agree on waste removal methods, which may include composting biodegradable litter.
