A curious cat named Luna has gone viral after her unexpected reaction to tasting sparkling water for the first time.
Luna, a beige tabby, eagerly leaned in to drink from a glass, but quickly pulled back after feeling the fizzy bubbles on her tongue. The moment was captured in a video shared on Instagram by her owner, @lunastales_, which has since gained 1.8 million views and over 74,000 likes.
In the video, Luna takes a hopeful sip, but her face changes instantly when she encounters the bubbles. She then walks away, clearly unimpressed by the sparkling sensation. Her owner humorously captioned the clip: “It’s the first time she drinks sparkle water… her last glance at the glass.”
Why do cats often drink from glasses? According to Catster, cats are curious and may prefer glasses because the water is fresher, cooler, or simply different from their own bowls. Cats are also naturally drawn to moving water or water placed higher up, which they might see as cleaner or safer.
The difference between still and sparkling water lies in carbonation. SodaSense explains that sparkling water contains dissolved carbon dioxide, causing bubbles and a tangy, fizzy sensation. This can be unusual or unpleasant for pets like Luna, who are used to still water.
Is sparkling water safe for cats? Catster says it is generally safe in small amounts, but too much could cause bloating or discomfort. Cats should only drink water without added sugars, flavors, or colors.
The video sparked a flood of comments from viewers who related to Luna’s reaction. One user wrote, “Why’s it spicy!,” while another joked, “She’s in the ‘tastes like TV static’ club.” The official Krispy Kreme account even chimed in with laughter.
Others predicted Luna’s future drinking habits, saying, “She’s never gonna drink from your cup again.”
Newsweek reached out to @lunastales_ for comment via Instagram but could not verify the details of the case.
