A Minnesota pet owner quickly regretted giving her orange cat water from the sink once. Now, the cat demands it every time he’s thirsty, leaving internet users laughing.
In a viral TikTok video posted by user @graceajacobs, her cat Kirby sits in the bathroom sink, staring and loudly “yelling” at her as if to say, “Turn on the water!”
The owner said in the video, “Gave my cat water from the sink once and now he sits in the sink and yells at me until I turn the sink on.” She added in the caption, “Mistake on my part.”
While Kirby seems fascinated by running water, most cats are actually afraid of water and will do everything to avoid getting wet.
Vet Help Direct explains that cats’ fear of water may come from their ancestors, who lived in desert regions of Northern Africa and had little exposure to water. Cats also like to keep their coats clean and neat, and water can disrupt that. Sometimes cats might sense something in the water that they find unappealing.
Regardless of their feelings about water, it is important for cat owners to ensure their pets drink enough daily. Signs a cat isn’t drinking enough include sunken eyes, dry mouth, constipation, panting, and loose skin, according to the Maury County Veterinarian Hospital (MCVH).
To keep cats hydrated, owners should offer fresh water every day, even if some remains from the day before. Using a different bowl or placing it in a new spot away from the litter box can also help. For cats on dry food, MCVH suggests switching to canned food to increase moisture intake.
The TikTok video quickly went viral, earning over 5.4 million views and 922,100 likes.
One viewer commented, “Orange cats, the drama queens of the cat world.” Another shared, “I did this with my cat 7 years ago. Guess what? We still do it today.” A third wrote, “Girl, he is not playing around.”
