Just like their owners, cats and dogs can struggle with seasonal allergies, according to veterinary expert Michael Natale. In an interview with PEOPLE, the licensed veterinary technician explained that pets are just as susceptible to allergens as humans—and symptoms can develop or worsen over time.
“Every animal has the potential to have or develop allergies. Just like people, they can also develop them as they get older,” Natale said. “It’s more common than most people think.”
Identifying and Managing Pet Allergies
Natale emphasized that allergies in pets must be addressed on a “case-by-case basis,” much like in humans. He shared his own experience managing his Rottweiler’s severe allergies through weekly injections, biweekly medicated baths, and a carefully selected diet.
One of the most frequent allergies he encounters in pets? Chicken—a common ingredient in many pet foods and products.
How Pet Owners Can Help
To properly address allergies, Natale advised owners to first identify the specific allergen affecting their pet.
“Your primary veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary dermatologist can test for allergens,” he said. Once identified, the key is minimizing exposure.
Natale recommended:
- Reading product ingredients carefully
- Following prescribed allergy medications
- Scheduling a vet exam if symptoms arise
“Most of all, have your pet examined if you feel something is off about them,” he added.
With proper care, pet owners can help their furry companions navigate allergy season more comfortably—just as they do for themselves.
