Indianapolis, IN – What began as an ordinary day for one Good Samaritan took an unexpected turn when she heard faint meowing coming from her riding lawn mower. Upon investigating, she discovered a litter of eight helpless kittens trapped beneath the machine, likely abandoned by their mother.
The quick-thinking rescuer carefully extracted the kittens from between the mower blades and contacted Animal Rescue & Protection Organization (ARPO) for assistance. With no sign of the mother cat, the kittens—hungry and in urgent need of care—were placed with experienced foster volunteers.
Round-the-Clock Care for Hungry Kittens
“They immediately latched onto the bottle with hungry little mews,” ARPO shared in a statement. Feeding eight tiny mouths proved challenging, so the rescue split the litter between two fosters to ensure each received proper attention.
Lori White, one of the foster volunteers, took in five of the kittens, waking up as early as 3:30 a.m. for feedings. “The kittens are helping me by being good eaters, which is always a relief,” she said.
Personalities Shine as Kittens Grow
Each kitten developed a distinct personality as they grew:
Daffodil, a bold calico, declared herself the group’s “diva,” preferring bottle feedings on her foster mom’s lap and even climbing out of the playpen to supervise office work.
Greta, a gray tabby, was one of the first to transition to solid food and took on a nurturing role with her siblings.
Sprout, a darker tabby, resisted weaning until he hit two pounds, flailing his paws eagerly during bottle time.
Mikey, a playful black kitten with a white chest patch, was the most vocal, while his brother Sam remained the calmest of the bunch.
Now thriving in foster care, the kittens are learning to eat independently and zipping around their playpen with endless energy. Once they’re old enough, all eight will be available for adoption through ARPO, ready to bring their unique charm to forever homes.
