When Brianna Walton noticed her two-month-old kitten, Gracie, shedding large clumps of fur, she feared the worst. But a trip to the vet revealed a surprising twist: Gracie wasn’t sick—she was a rare Lykoi, also known as a “wolf cat.”
Walton, a 29-year-old photographer from Maine, had been fostering a pair of cats and decided to keep Gracie after she was born into one of their litters. Concerned about the kitten’s patchy fur, she took her to the veterinarian, where tests confirmed Gracie was healthy—aside from a mild fever.
“The vet told me Gracie is a Lykoi—she looks like a werewolf, and I think that’s the coolest thing,” Walton told The Mirror.
The Viral Wolf Kitten
Gracie’s unique appearance has captivated social media. A TikTok video explaining her breed—rather than an illness—has amassed 7.5 million views.
“I hoped it might go viral because she’s a one-of-a-kind kitty with a special story,” Walton said. Fans can follow Gracie’s adventures on Instagram and TikTok.
What Is a Lykoi Cat?
The Lykoi is a striking breed with distinct traits:
Genetic Mutation: Their patchy, werewolf-like coats stem from a natural mutation that sporadically appeared in domestic cats before the breed was officially recognized in 2011.
Shedding Cycles: Lykois shed their entire coats up to twice a year, requiring regular grooming.
Personality: Despite their eerie appearance, they’re affectionate and playful—though they can be independent.
Interested in adopting one? Consider names like Remus, Oz, or Jacob for a fittingly mythical touch.
For now, Walton is just happy her “little wolf” is healthy—and stealing hearts online.
