LOS ANGELES – A pregnant tabby cat named Goldie, once struggling to survive on the streets, is now thriving in foster care—with an unexpected assist from a doting dog.
From Streets to Safety
Goldie had been roaming outdoors, relying on neighbors for refuge from coyotes, when a local veterinarian—also a volunteer with Kitten Rescue Life—discovered her. “She tried to jump into the vet’s car like she was ready to leave,” said Asa, a foster volunteer with the rescue.
Taken in during her final days of pregnancy, Goldie settled into her foster home with ease. “She’s a total purr bucket,” Asa told Love Meow, describing the affectionate cat’s immediate bond with her caregivers.
A New Family
Days later, Goldie gave birth to three healthy kittens: Barbara, Bernard, and Angel. The tailless Manx mix, estimated to be just six months old herself, proved to be a devoted mother. “She’s been the sweetest, most attentive mom,” Asa said. The kittens—two tailless like Goldie, one with a full tail—quickly grew plump and playful.
Enter Kona, the Canine Nanny
The feline family’s routine took a heartwarming turn when Asa’s dog, Kona, joined the fold. Goldie, curious and trusting, ventured out of her foster room and “introduced herself with a polite nose boop,” Asa said. Kona, a seasoned foster helper, was instantly enamored.
“Goldie doesn’t mind Kona interacting with the kittens—I think she appreciates the backup,” Asa noted. The dog now serves as a vigilant babysitter, entertaining the kittens while Goldie takes breaks.
Next Steps
With Goldie spayed to prevent future litters, the family will remain in foster care until the kittens are weaned and ready for adoption. For now, their days are filled with exploration, cuddles, and an unlikely interspecies bond.
