NEW YORK — A frightened tabby cat, abandoned in a park and hiding behind a carrier, got a second chance at life thanks to a group of kind strangers and a dedicated rescuer.
Two months ago, Meagan, president of the animal rescue organization PuppyKittyNYCity, received an urgent plea about a hungry, disoriented cat in need of help. Good Samaritans had discovered the feline crying for attention near a carrier in the park and quickly intervened.
From Desperation to Safety
The cat, later named Lincoln after the location where he was found, had been surviving on scraps from a young woman who had been feeding him. Relieved to see him rescued, she handed him over to Meagan, who provided immediate shelter, warmth, and food.
Upon arrival at the rescue, Lincoln devoured his first meal ravenously, as if unsure when he’d eat again. Meagan offered him seconds, reassuring him that his days of hunger were over. That night, he curled up in a cozy makeshift “cave” and slept peacefully—his belly full for the first time in weeks.
Learning to Trust Again
Though initially nervous and growling over meals—a sign of food insecurity—Lincoln gradually warmed up to Meagan. She used his love of food to build trust, hand-feeding him treats and petting him gently during meals. Over time, he stopped guarding his food and even began eating from her hand.
“Watching a foster cat learn to trust is one of the most rewarding experiences,” Meagan said. “Lincoln still bolts to his bowl when he hears a can open, but he’s come so far.”
A Bright Future Ahead
After weeks of rehabilitation, Lincoln moved to a foster home, where he discovered the joys of playtime—particularly attacking a feather wand with all four paws. His resilient spirit and affectionate nature shone through, proving that even the toughest beginnings can lead to happy endings.
“He’s a survivor with so much love to give,” Meagan said. “Now, he just needs a patient forever family who understands his journey.”
