BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Utah — A 12-year-old cat named Mirage is recovering at an animal sanctuary after surviving a 380-foot fall in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park—a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two hikers.
On April 29, rescuers discovered Mirage inside a damaged carrier near the bodies of a man and woman at the base of Inspiration Point. The couple, identified as 45-year-old Matthew Nannen and 58-year-old Bailee Crane, had reportedly crossed a safety railing before the fall, though authorities have not yet determined the exact circumstances.
Garfield County Sheriff’s Office stated that tourists spotted the victims between Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Investigators noted the couple, originally from Florida, had been living out of a U-Haul van and had recently spent time in Arizona.
Mirage, the sole survivor, was transported to Pawz Dogs boarding facility in Panguitch before being transferred to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. The sanctuary, the largest no-kill facility of its kind, reported that despite her ordeal, Mirage was alert, eating on her own, and in relatively stable condition.
“She was matted and a bit sore but friendly during her exam,” a Best Friends spokesperson told PEOPLE. X-rays revealed fractured ribs and two chipped teeth, but her bloodwork showed no major concerns.
“Despite surviving a 400-foot fall, this remarkable little cat never lost her gentle spirit,” the sanctuary said. “Her resilience is awe-inspiring, but it’s her loving nature that truly leaves a mark.”
Mirage continues to recover under veterinary care, astonishing staff with her calm demeanor. “She’s a living miracle,” the sanctuary added, “still purring, still trusting, like nothing ever happened.”
Authorities are investigating the incident, while Best Friends prepares to place Mirage in a permanent home once she’s fully healed.
