CHICAGO — A litter of tuxedo kittens recently arrived at PAWS Chicago, but one tiny standout captured hearts immediately: Craisin, a nearly hairless kitten with peach fuzz, gray sideburns, and an unforgettable wrinkled appearance.
An Unexpected Arrival
Craisin and her siblings were surrendered after their previous owner became overwhelmed by the number of cats in their home—at least 30, according to Allison Wunder, senior digital media manager at PAWS Chicago.
“So far, we’ve taken in 12 cats—one adult and 11 kittens—with more to come,” Wunder told The Dodo. “Out of all of them, Craisin is the only hairless one. It was definitely a surprise.”
A Genetic Mystery
Why Craisin lacks fur remains unclear. Veterinary exams ruled out medical causes like demodectic mange, and her siblings are healthy and social. Some speculate her hairlessness could stem from a recessive gene, though neither parent has been identified as hairless.
Hairlessness in cats is typically linked to a KRT71 gene mutation, seen in breeds like the Sphynx. Others online have suggested Craisin might be part Lykoi (or “wolf cat“), a partially hairless breed with a werewolf-like appearance.
“There’s also a chance it’s stress-related, and her fur could grow back,” Wunder added.
Staying Warm—and Snuggly
Like most hairless cats, Craisin is sensitive to cold and often wears a tiny sweater-and-hat set made from a sock. But her favorite way to stay warm? Cuddling with her fluffier siblings.
“She’s a big snuggler—usually burrowed under another kitten,” Wunder said. “The others don’t treat her differently, though she’s definitely the most laid-back of the bunch.”
Searching for Forever Homes
Craisin and her siblings are still up for adoption. Interested Chicago-area residents can learn more via PAWS Chicago’s website.
While her future remains uncertain, one thing’s for sure: This unique kitten will never run short of love—or cozy cuddles.
