A pet owner recently agreed to foster a cat temporarily, expecting it to be a short stay. However, her resident cat, Yonkers, had other plans.
A touching video posted in May on TikTok under the username @yonkieboy shows the two cats cuddling and grooming each other on their very first day together. The owner’s caption reads: “POV: you decided to foster a cat short term, but this is him and my cat on the first day they meet,” followed by, “Idk if it’s going to be a short term visit…”
While cats are often seen as solitary animals, some enjoy the company of another feline. But before bringing in a new cat, it’s important to assess if your current pet really needs a companion.
Signs that your cat may benefit from a friend include loneliness, clinginess, changes in eating habits, or destructive behavior. Still, these symptoms don’t always mean your cat wants another feline. Veterinarians warn that medical issues should be ruled out before assuming loneliness is the cause.
If your cat is healthy and just needs a buddy, experts recommend introducing the new cat slowly. Start by keeping them in separate areas and allowing only supervised meetings until they grow comfortable together, according to Pet MD.
One commenter, Sarah Disassociating, humorously noted: “I think your cat just adopted a cat, so technically you still only have one cat, who happens to also have a cat.”
