A month ago, Best Friends Felines, a volunteer-run rescue organization, received an urgent plea about a mother cat and her five kittens in desperate need of placement. The feline family of six was quickly moved to a foster home, where the kittens immediately began exploring their new surroundings, their tiny meows filling the room.
The mother cat, named Selkie, was given time to decompress after her ordeal. At around four weeks old, her “mythical”-themed litter—Alicorn, Aziza, Nixie, Griffin, and Sasquatch—started learning to use the litter box and transition to solid food.
A Devoted but Weary Mother
Selkie, believed to be young herself, proved to be an attentive parent despite being underweight. To help her regain strength, rescuers placed her on a high-calorie kitten diet.
“Momma appears to be quite young but is very attentive to her kittens,” a Best Friends Felines representative said. “She’s a gentle soul with a sweet chirp and a calming, melodic purr that brings peace to any room.”
As the kittens grew more independent, Selkie enjoyed well-earned breaks, no longer needing to constantly monitor her adventurous litter. The family received veterinary care for minor stomach issues, and soon, the kittens fully transitioned from nursing to eating on their own.
Kittens Turn into ‘Chaos Goblins’
With proper nutrition and medical care, the kittens flourished, their energy levels skyrocketing. Their foster carer described them as “crazy chaos goblins,” always on the move—wrestling, pouncing, and investigating every corner of their space.
Meanwhile, Selkie embraced her newfound relaxation, often napping peacefully while her kittens played. “After lovingly raising her five kittens, it’s her time to shine—and shine she does,” the rescue shared.
Selkie’s New Chapter
Now that her mothering duties are complete, Selkie is ready for a forever home where she can be pampered. Her coat, once dull, has grown sleek and snowy white, and she’s developed a love for toys and human companionship.
“She adores a quick cuddle and simply loves being near her humans—whether that’s relaxing at your feet or quietly following you from room to room,” the rescue said.
Thanks to the dedication of Best Friends Felines, Selkie and her kittens are healthy, happy, and eagerly awaiting adoption. The kittens, now bundles of energy and fluff, will soon find homes of their own, while Selkie looks forward to a life of comfort and affection.
