Montreal, QC—A resilient deaf kitten named Pouf has not only overcome a difficult start to life but has also become an unexpected source of courage for a once-timid feline companion.
A Rough Beginning
Pouf was among a group of abandoned cats left in front of a Montreal home before being rescued by a Good Samaritan. The tiny kitten, malnourished and battling an ear infection and digestive issues, was taken in by Chatons Orphelins Montreal.
Despite his fragile state, Pouf refused to give up. “He responded so well to his treatment and began to gain weight and strength,” the rescue shared. Once healthy, his playful, fearless personality emerged—even chasing after a running vacuum without hesitation.
A veterinary exam revealed Pouf was partially deaf, likely since birth. Though his hearing improved slightly after treatment, he still struggled to locate sounds. Yet, his disability never slowed him down. “He is full of energy and mischief,” his caregivers said. “He isn’t afraid of anything.”
A Friendship That Changed Everything
While Pouf thrived in foster care, he longed for a playmate. That’s when he met Chip, a shy orange tabby rescued after scavenging for food during a harsh winter. Initially wary of humans, Chip found comfort in other cats—making him the perfect match for Pouf.
The two bonded instantly. Pouf shadowed Chip everywhere, even grooming him as if to reassure him. “Though they aren’t from the same litter, they play and tussle like brothers,” the rescue said. Their dynamic helped Chip overcome his fears—when he saw Pouf cuddling with their foster mom, he mustered the courage to do the same.
Now, the inseparable pair tear through the house together, their loud purrs a testament to their joyful second chance. “Pouf’s outgoing personality helped Chip come out of his shell,” the rescue added. “They complement each other perfectly.”
